players trip at random and there's not much else i know about it. sometimes they are sent flying and other times they just fall over.
and before you say "client-side made you think his dive was over when it really wasn't" or something, this can happen even when there are no hazards or anything interfering with your player

Sometimes I kick a player when they roll and they stumble back as usual, but then they trip at the end anyways. I notice this the most near ladders.
