What is "connect to IP"?

Every equipment linked to the internet got an IP adress. Joining through IP allows user to join a private game (a non-public game), since private games wont show up in the lobby selector.

For the host to get its IP, it have to google 'my ip' or to take a look at its config.

Sometimes people can't or just don't host publicly. Connect to IP will allow a player to connect to the hosting player's IP address (if they are able to host an SFD game). Sometimes it's even more effective than browsing the server list directly.

You also use it when you want to join a private game your friend is hosting (or vice-versa) as the others mentioned. Hamachi isn't necessary to host and play games, simple port forwarding will do just fine.
